President Joe Biden just announced he’ll run for a second term with the slogan, “Together, we can finish the job for the American people!” It reminded me of Abraham Lincoln’s “Don’t change horses midstream,” so I tweeted the cartoon above, which ran in Harper’s Weekly on November 12th, 1864.
Jamelle Bouie’s reply is perfect because it triggered a defensive response totally unrelated to the Lincoln horse: I’d rather have Uncle Sam ride Biden than Donald Trump!
If Trump is indeed the GOP candidate, my knee-jerk response bodes well for Biden’s chances in 2024. We tested them both out on pretty rough terrain. Biden was broken in, dependable, slow and steady. Trump spent the whole time trying to buck us.
Biden’s announcement has been long expected, but the timing is perfect. He’s focused while Trump is, as always, besieged: It’s the first day of E. Jean Carroll’s battery and defamation trial against him.
