NEW EPISODE OF “DUNCAN & COE HISTORY SHOW”
A NATIONWIDE AFFIRMATION OF MEDIOCRITY
Picture it: campaign posters enticing citizens to "Vote for OK," a nationwide affirmation of mediocrity.
In the 1840 presidential election, Martin Van Buren faced off against war hero William Henry Harrison, who rallied voters with the catchy “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too." In an attempt to compete, Van Buren’s supporters rallied under a linguistic banner by leveraging the last two letters of his nickname, “Old Kinderhook." While "OK" embedded itself in day-to-day language but the campaign itself fizzled. It could charm the ear even even as it failed to capture the vote.
Earlier this week, James Bradley and I discussed that and much more at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum.
See you soonish! In the meantime, you can find me on Bluesky, Twitter, and Instagram. My books on Bookshop, Amazon, and your local bookstore or library. If you’d like me to sign or personalize my books, purchase copies from Oblong Books.
