I worked at Mount Vernon while in college 20+ years ago. There were definitely Black people on staff, but they were mostly maintenance and security. I think there might have been a Black interpreter. But the administrative staff was definitely all white with a Southern vibe. Many were connected to the military either via a spouse who was a retired serviceman or a son currently serving, so there was that strong vibe as well. It was an interesting place for sure. I don’t know how much has changed, but back then Washington was considered and presented as a godlike figure and a saint who could do no wrong. Anything unpleasant about him had an excuse. At the time, they didn’t even mention that some of his false teeth came from enslaved people. Only that they were made of ivory and other materials (not wood).

Hi! Yes, in all the links/past posts, I explicitly state that I'm talking about Library staff (research), executive, etc. I believe there's been quite a lot of issues with their Black reenactors of late.

Doesn’t surprise me in the least.
